AI Interview Practice for Career Centres and Early-Career L&D

A career centre can write an excellent question bank and still not know whether students can say the answers. An early-career learning team has the same problem with new hires: the rubric exists, the mock slots do not scale, and silent preparation does not show whether someone can cover the points under pressure.

This piece is for the people who provision that practice. Campus career centres, university employability teams, and early-career L&D. Elqo is bought by the institution and issued to the cohort. It turns the centre's own questions into voice practice and scores comprehension for the staff who run the programme.

Why a centre outgrows informal rehearsal

Advisers already know the limits of the usual path. Students reread their notes. A friend listens once. A lucky few get a booked slot. None of that gives the centre a comparable record across a cohort, and none of it checks the answer against the points the centre itself decided mattered.

Two findings from learning research are worth keeping in view. Retrieval practice, including work by Roediger and Karpicke, shows that recalling an answer beats rereading it. Deliberate practice, associated with Ericsson, adds the other half: the task has to be defined, and the feedback has to be about that task. Speaking an answer out loud, against the centre's own criteria, fits both. A generic confidence score does not.

Staff time is the constraint. Four advisers and four hundred students cannot sit in on every first attempt. A first pass that is practiced out loud, and scored for whether it covered the rubric, lets advisers spend live sessions on the gaps.

What to require before you buy

Interview tools are easy to demo and hard to operationalise. A career centre or an early-career team can narrow the field with five questions.

  1. Whose questions are practiced? The institution's bank, competencies, and model points. A public prompt library is a different product.
  2. What can staff review? Comprehension against that material, for a student or a new hire, and across a cohort.
  3. Who holds the agreement? The centre or the employer. Learners receive access from the institution.
  4. Can people repeat the same question? Interview skill moves on a second and third spoken attempt, with feedback on the criteria each time.
  5. Can procurement quote it? Seat cap and monthly active users, scoped to a term or an intake.

How the options differ

Buyer The career centre or early-career L&D team An individual, or a team buying meeting analytics An individual
Practice material The institution's questions, rubrics, and model points The user's own recordings and a small set of roleplays In-app prompts and free speech

Yoodli and Orai prices are published consumer rates for those products. They describe an individual buying a speaking tool. They are not Elqo's price, and they are not a campus agreement.

Other names sit nearby and serve a different hour of the week. Big Interview offers a question bank and video practice. Interviewing.io introduces candidates to people for live technical mocks. Both can be useful to a person assembling their own prep. A centre that needs every student practicing the centre's rubric, with a score advisers can compare, is buying a provisioned practice layer.

How Elqo runs inside an institution

Elqo is issued by the career centre or the early-career team. Staff load the questions they already trust and the points an answer needs to hit. Students or new hires practice out loud. Advisers and programme managers read comprehension scores and spend their live time on what the score shows is missing.

A campus might do this for behavioural interviews in final year. An employer might do it for an early-career intake before first client meetings or internal interviews. A coaching institution that prepares people for selection conversations can run the same pattern on its own method. In each case the content belongs to the institution, and so does the agreement. Learners are participants in a programme. See Elqo for education for how campuses use the practice layer.

A workable sequence for staff

  1. Fix the criteria first. Write the questions and the points a complete answer must cover. The score is only as useful as that definition.
  2. Let the first attempts happen in the product. Students practice before they book an adviser. The score is a starting point, not a verdict on the person.
  3. Review one gap at a time. If a cohort is missing the result in a STAR answer, coach that point. Pace and filler words can matter in the room, and they are not a substitute for covering the criteria.
  4. Use live slots for the second pass. Advisers hear the questions the scores flagged, which is a better use of a 20-minute appointment.
  5. Keep the bank current. When employers change what they ask, the centre updates the material everyone practices. The cohort stays on the centre's version.

Yoodli remains a reasonable personal tool if someone wants analytics on a live call, within a free plan of five lifetime roleplays or a paid plan from about $20 a month. Orai remains a reasonable personal drill on a phone, typically about $10 to $15 a month. A centre can allow either without pretending they are the centre's practice system. For the category difference, see Elqo, Yoodli, and Orai.

What good looks like for the buyer

The centre can say, for a cohort, who has practiced the questions that matter here, and who can cover the points the staff defined. Early-career L&D can say the same of a new-hire intake before managers spend interview time discovering gaps that practice would have shown. That record is the reason to buy. A consumer app on a student's own card does not give it to you.

Questions buyers ask

Who buys the interview practice?

The career centre or the early-career learning team. They provision access for students or new hires. Pricing is a custom quote based on seat cap and monthly active users.

What should students practice?

The centre's own questions and the points a strong answer has to cover. Elqo scores the spoken answer against that material, so advisers can see comprehension before they spend a live session.

How is a campus or early-career programme quoted?

On seat cap and monthly active users. Book a demo to scope the cohort for a term, a faculty, or an early-career intake.
